1.0 Introduction
SNMP is a protocol that offers network management services within the Internet (TCP/IP) suite of protocols. Most leading network products support SNMP, allowing vendor-independent management of network devices and applications.
Benefits of SNMP include the following:
- Minimal-impact design. SNMP is designed to be small, simple, and have minimal impact on the network device it manages.
- Datagram (connectionless, best-effort) protocol. Under conditions where your network is having trouble, a connectionless protocol performs better than a connection-oriented protocol, which spends most of its time rebuilding dropped connections rather than moving data.
- Trap-directed polling. During situations when the network device is running low on memory, the SNMP agent sends a trap to the network manager, informing them that a network device exists. The network manager polls the network device based on the trap to determine the exact problem.
- Security. SNMP has a security mechnism whereby each packet contains the community string, which is a combination of the user name and password and is used by a network device to determine the level of management control a network manager has over a network device.
- Network Management services. SNMP provides network management services to the network, including installation, maintenance, configuration, performance, and fault management.
2.0 What's New
SNMP now supports sparse tables. The instrumented agent (through the error codes specified in the agent.h file) specifies the presence of sparse tables to enable the NetWare® SNMP to perform the sparse table request.
