1.0 Introduction

Novell Certificate Server for C Version 1 API (PKIS) provides developers with a single set of functions that can be used to create, manage, and access X.509 certificates. The API is being provided on the Windows* NT/2000/XP (both client and server) platforms, and NetWare 5/6.

IMPORTANT:  PKIS is in process of being deprecated and replaced with the Novell Certificate Server for C Version 2 (NPKI) and Novell Public Key Infrastructure Toolbox (NPKIT) APIs. When used together, NPKI and NPKIT provide the same functionality as PKIS, but eliminate its dependency upon the Novell client. In other words, neither NPKI nor NPKIT require the Novell client. All new Certificate Server Development should use the new NPKI and NPKIT APIs. To download these new APIs, go to the Novell Certificate Server Libraries.

2.0 What's New

To see what was changed in the software, sample code, and documentation for previous releases, see the What's New Archive at: http://developer.novell.com/ndk/wn_ncslibv1.htm.

Because this API is being deprecated, minimal support will be provided in the future. However, to see the specific documentation changes that were made, see Revision History at: see the specific documentation changes that were made, see the Revision History within the document.

3.0 Documentation

We've enabled Start menu documentation entries. After you have installed the documentation, use the "NDK Documents" entry on your Start menu to quickly locate and access NDK documentation.

To read or print the documentation, you need Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0, a free download available from http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html.

The documents in this download were created as standalone files; therefore, links between files in this download and links to files in other downloads will not resolve. The download includes the following documentation files in the [install directory]\\NDK\\doc\\ncslibv1 directory:

4.0 System Requirements

4.1 Server

4.2 Administrator Workstation

4.3 User Workstation

5.0 Linking Libraries

Using the API with Windows as a client, the API functionality is provided as a multi-threaded dynamic library. The library you will need to link to is: win32\\final\\pkiapi.lib

Using the API with NetWare (Server) as a Client, the API functionality is provided in the library NLM: PKIAPI.nlm

You may wish to auto-load the NLM when your NLM loads. The import file is: inc\\pkiapi.imp
